UK Uganda Network

Marv Takel with Nick Winter returned to Uganda in February/early March taking with them 4,000 Uganda Scout Association National Badges, costing nearly £900,for which the UK Africa Scout Fellowship funded 50% cost from its crediting account.

They were also able to give a donation for medicine for our old and faithful contact in Uganda, Sammy Senkumba, who many of you will remember was our first contact with Uganda in 1988. His health is declining and, as we appreciate, there is no NHS to fund medication.

Whilst in Uganda, they visited the BP Training Centre and Camping Ground at Bwenda to see the latest improvements and maintenance together with the effects of the new dam across the Nile that will raise the level of the site by the river by a metre in the forthcoming months.

Nick Winter has advised that his colleagues in Avon have received a donation of £20,000 towards the orphanage they sponsor in Jinja, Uganda.

Mityana Development Foundation

Dave Mowbray and two Scout Leaders returned to Uganda in April to follow up the support and progress they have given to Scouting in Mityana and Mokuno and set the wheels in motion for Northumberland's next project which will be in the Masaka area, hopefully to construct a very much needed Vocational Centre. They were accompanied by Sammy Senkumba the Executive Secretary of the Friends of Scouting Society, Uganda, who has been our link since 1988 and also met up with old friend Nicholas Kamya Sempala who was for many years District Commissioner for Mityana.

In addition they met with Geoff Breedon who as a member of the original team from Northumberland that built the Training Centre at Kaazi for the Uganda Scout Association in 1991. Since his visit in 2000 he set up Mityana Community Foundation and now lives in Uganda and encouraged the promotion of Fire Safety and Protection in Schools and Public Buildings.

Although Geoff is no longer linked with the Foundation the work goes on and Dave was able to float the idea of extending the Training Programme to the Uganda Scout Association. After further discussions news has just arrived that the Foundation's offer has been accepted nationally by the Uganda Scouts and a Training Package is being prepared and a Firemans Badge, which will be sponsored by the Foundation, is being introduced.
